Empowering Refugee Students at Kent

We at the University of Kent believe that everyone should have the opportunity to study at a university irrespective of their background. We are proud that our campus is a welcoming and inclusive space for everyone.

In committing to become a University of Sanctuary in 2019, we set up Sanctuary scholarships to give three refugees and asylum seekers every year the opportunity to receive a University of Kent education. The scholarships cover a full fee waiver for an undergraduate programme as well as small maintenance grants.

Recipients of these awards have been through some of the most difficult and challenging experiences one can imagine. And yet their wish to receive a university education has remained constant and undimmed.

Generous donations from our alumni community have made it possible for students like Fathima Riyaldeen to pursue their dreams, make a positive impact on their families and contribute to their community and our country.

Fathima was a beneficiary of the Sanctuary scholarship when she sought asylum in the UK in 2010. She studied Accountancy and Finance and graduated in 2019 with a First from Kent Business School.

"I was unable to apply for a student loan due to my immigration status. The scholarship provided me with the opportunity to attend this university and obtain a degree. I am the first person in my family to attend university. Without your kind donations, I would not be here. The scholarship has truly changed my life," she said.

We are striving to increase the amount available for maintenance, with the goal of ensuring that all Sanctuary Scholars receive a maintenance allowance that allows them to undertake their studies without hardship. Your donation will directly impact refugee and asylum-seeking students, helping them rebuild their lives through their education and find a new home within the Kent community.

• A monthly gift of £10 would cover health costs for a student, such as prescriptions and dental treatment for an academic year.

• A monthly gift of £50 would enable a student to travel to and from the University for an academic year.

• A monthly gift of £250 would cover essentials for a student, such as food, stationery, laundry, etc. for an academic year.

• A one-off gift of £5,000 would help provide a student with on-campus accommodation for an academic year.

Your gift can make all the difference. Change a life today.
